Urban Tale

A pixel-art urban life RPG for Steam: start with nothing, take jobs, craft, farm, trade and build a life in the city.

Urban Tale artwork

An open-ended life sim. You arrive in a city with nothing and work your way up as a bartender, banker, florist, postman or pickpocket. You craft, cook, farm and sell goods, build relationships, and live through the changing seasons. It is published on Steam by WASD Games.

I did not start it from scratch: I picked the game up at an existing stage of development and carried it forward.

Took over mid-development

What I did

  1. 01Took the game over at an existing stage of development and carried it forward.
  2. 02Lead on the UI and 2D programming.
  3. 03Contributed to the architecture while keeping the existing codebase running.
  4. 04Fixed bugs and prepared the Steam builds.

What stands out

  1. 01Took over an in-progress codebase and continued development without a restart.
  2. 02Lead on the UI and 2D programming, and a contributor to the architecture.
  3. 03Released on Steam in December 2019.
  4. 04Life-sim / career-driven narrative game: player moves to a downtown area to build a life from scratch, choosing a career path (bartender, grocery store clerk, gardener/florist, crime, postal worker, etc.) that becomes their personal story.
  5. 05Structured as branching dialogue trees with player YES/NO choices per job stage, and a level-up ladder within each career (e.g. Bartender: Cleaner to Supplier to Waiter to Cocktail Bartender), gating narrative progression on completing daily task checklists.
  6. 06Setting is a modern city/downtown environment (nightclub, grocery store, flower shop as career hubs); tone is light and comedic, told through NPC banter (e.g. Bar Manager) rather than heavy plot.
